【2】Zhang Yu, 23, graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong last year. Having majored in English, she got a job at a Beijing-based translation company. Zhang is the only person in her department who knows how to use translation tools, which allow her to work much faster than others. She decided not to share her “secret weapon” with others.

【3】“My colleagues started to ignore me when they found out I was using translation tools to improve my work efficiency”, she says.

【4】Zhang had thought her speed would impress her boss. But as it turned out, the boss was not happy with her performance. “He criticized me for showing off and not working well with my colleagues,” Zhang says.

【5】For rookies the most important virtue is being humble, says Song Ye, an HR professional at Reed Exhibitions. “Even if you’re more talented than the seniors, you need to show a willingness to learn”, Song says.

【6】 “The workplace is a new ‘campus’ for graduates where they learn to cooperate and deal with different people,” he says. “Keeping a low profile and learning to work with others makes graduates more accessible to colleagues, who in turn can help them blend into the new environment.”

【7】This, however, doesn’t mean workplace newbies should hide their strengths, says Wang Yimin, a career consultant at Sunward Career Management Consulting Group.

【8】 “Updating the boss on your progress not only demonstrates your ability, but also shows you have initiative and good communication skills,” Wang says.
